MiDAS Accessible Course

Road Safety - Everyone's Business

MiDAS is the Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme, organised by the Community Transport Association U.K. (CTA) which promotes a nationally recognised standard for the assessment and training of minibus drivers.

 

It is a membership based scheme that is designed to enhance minibus driving standards and promote the safer operation of minibuses, currently there are over 5,000 member organisations throughout the UK.

MiDAS Minibus Accessible Driver Training

Accessible driver assessment/training is aimed at those organisations and drivers that transport passengers with disabilities.

  • MiDAS Accessible Driver Training is designed and certified by the CTA and is a quality standard for organisations and drivers who transport passengers with disabilities.

  • Is relevant to volunteers as well as paid employed staff

  • Covers legal, practical and safety issues - a comprehensive training package

  • Aims to improve passenger safety by providing the necessary skills for those who have responsibility of driving passengers with disabilities, and provides information to allow drivers to understand and meet the needs of their passengers

  • The course is aimed at those organisations and drivers that deal with accessible minibuses and have responsibility for carrying passengers with disabilities.

  • Certification last for four years after which a 1 day refresher course is required to maintain certification

 

Prerequisite for Accessible Training

Anyone wishing to undertake the MiDAS Accessible course must hold a MiDAS, Standard Driving Certificate.
The Standard MiDAS course can be taken as a stand alone course or combined with the Accessible training course at the same time, over a 2 day training course.

Accessible Training Content

  • The Disability Discrimination Act (1995 as Amended 2005)

  • Disability awareness

  • Safe use of wheelchair & passenger restraint equipment & lifts

  • Statistical information on disability

  • The social model of disability

  • Language  issues

  • Driver etiquette

  • Communicating issues for those with disabilities

 

All “accessible” trainers are also required to pass a practical assessment of their use of passenger lifts and wheelchair & passenger restraint equipment.
 

Who Benefits from this Training?

MiDAS is applicable to any organisation operating or using minibuses. Member organisations range from small voluntary organisations operating one vehicle, to local authorities operating large fleets of minibuses as well as schools, colleges and universities.
